Welcome to the 2016 edition of the Automotive News PACE Awards recognizing innovation in the global automotive supply chain. In April, as they have for the past twenty years, suppliers from around the world will gather in Detroit Michigan at the beginning of SAE Week to see who will be recognized for bringing game changing innovation to their OEM customers and the automotive industry.

The PACE Awards Program welcomes entries from all suppliers to automotive OEMs. Applicants and winners have come from six continents including large and small companies supplying production parts, materials, capital equipment and services.

Who should apply?

Suppliers with innovations delivered to automotive assembler's with a significant impact on vehicles produced between the start of the 2015 Model Year and the end of the 2016 Calendar Year.    (Note: Vehicles include Passenger cars, light-duty trucks, commercial trucks, trailers, and buses, and two or three wheel devices used for personal transportation.) Innovations include 1) products, 2) processes, materials, or capital equipment, or 3) IT enabled systems/networks affecting vehicles or vehicle operations.

Entering a PACE Application increases suppliers' internal and external innovation visibility!

A PACE Awards application is not only a public statement as to a supplier's commitment to innovation, it signifies the readiness of the innovation, the supplier's innovation team, and their innovation processes to stand up to a rigorous review by an independent panel of industry experts. This commitment to compete speaks volumes to the engineering community that strives to add value and gain recognition.

Two additional ways PACE Awards participation strengthens innovation rigor and accelerates tempo.

Several suppliers are now using the PACE Awards online application process as the platform for an internal competition between multiple teams or divisions. Each innovation team opens individual PACE Awards applications listing a common parent company. This allows the innovation teams to independently draft the application yet connect with marketing, legal, and management teams for input and review along the way. Near the submission deadline in August the innovation applications are internally vetted by the Company's senior leadership and the best ones are formally submitted for consideration by the PACE Award jury. The internal competition and proven PACE process for documenting the How, Why and (especially) the What of innovation significance strengthens teams and sharpens their view of customer needs and value creation.

As participation in the PACE Awards has evolved over the past twenty-two years it has also become clear that several suppliers now use the judging process as a cost effective means for annually capturing an independent perspective on the innovation performance of their engineering teams. Between the Finalist announcements in October, the interaction and feedback gained during the Finalist Site Visits in November/December and the PACE Awards announcements in April some suppliers now use the program as a benchmark for the velocity and direction of their innovation efforts and transformation progress.
